Euthymios Gatos Building – Agia Lavra Square

The Euthymios Gatos Building
, prominently located on Agia Lavra Square, is a fine example of Aigio’s neoclassical architecture and is closely associated with the city’s period of economic and urban growth during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its construction reflects the prosperity of Aigio as an important commercial and administrative centre, while its prominent location on the town’s main square highlights its role as a landmark of public and social life. Agia Lavra Square, the principal square of Aigio, was gradually developed following the devastating earthquake of 1861 as part of the city’s reconstruction and urban modernization. The square is named in honour of the Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra, which is symbolically associated with the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Since then, it has evolved into the administrative, commercial, and social heart of Aigio, hosting major cultural events, public celebrations, and civic gatherings. Today, it remains one of the city’s most significant landmarks and an integral part of Aigio’s historical and urban identity.
