Ancient Aigai was one of the principal cities of ancient Aigialeia, with a history dating back to the Archaic period. The city played an active role in the political, religious, and social life of the region and contributed to the broader development of the cities of northern Peloponnese. As one of the member cities of the Achaean League, Aigai participated in the political network that shaped the history of ancient Achaea. Although only limited archaeological remains have survived, the site’s historical importance lies in its contribution to the organization of the Achaean city-states and to the formation of the cultural and regional identity of ancient Aigialeia. Today, Ancient Aigai stands as a valuable testament to the area’s rich historical heritage and its significance in the ancient Greek world.
