Ancient Boura was one of the most important cities of ancient Aigialeia, located near present-day Ano Diakopto. Owing to its strategic position, the city played a significant role in the political and religious life of the region. Boura was also renowned for its sacred springs and religious cults, which made it an important center of worship and social activity in antiquity. The city’s history was profoundly affected by the devastating earthquake of 373 BC, the same catastrophic event that destroyed nearby Ancient Helike. Although Boura was not submerged, the earthquake dramatically altered the region and marked a turning point in the city’s development.Today, Ancient Boura remains an important archaeological and historical site, offering valuable insights into the civilization of ancient Aigialeia and highlighting the close relationship between the natural environment, religious traditions, and everyday life in the ancient Greek world.
