Folklore Museum

The Folklore Museum was founded in 1994 in the mansion of Anastasios Lontos.

Here, the local tradition and popular heritage open a dialogue with visitors, offering valuable knowledge and deep emotions.

The museum’s collection found a home in the two-story stone building, about 200 years old, a testament of Peloponnesian architecture, with large windows and an external stone staircase. The interior is lined with wood panels both on the floor and on the ceiling.

You will find the Folklore Museum on the ground floor and the History Museum on the first floor, distinguished by its local character, hosting historical and folklore material from the Ottoman era to the present day. Most of its rich and remarkable exhibits are valuable family heirlooms, offered by generous locals. They are donations of true museum value, made by people who chose to remove them from the close family circle and share a piece of history with the rest of the world. Indeed, the donors have a deep knowledge and are aware that History belongs to everyone.

Here you will find rich material from weapons, uniforms and local costumes, embroidery, furniture, farm tools and household utensils. It is a remarkable collection, perfectly organised, classified and meticulously distributed in units. The folklore exhibits are divided into four rooms and the historical in six rooms.

The room with the hats, crockery, portraits and furniture is of particular interest, seeped in the intense nostalgic aroma of the bourgeois era of Aegio.
