This district was developed by people from Galaxidi, during Greece’s Ottoman Occupation. In specific, in 1820 Ali Passas of Giannena asked the people from Galaxidi to staff his boats with sailors and captains, and they accepted.
However, Ali Passas was not consistent with his payments, and so they left him. They moved in Aigio, (about 250 families) and developed a district called “Galaxidiotika”.
These new migrants were traders and brought economic prosperity to the city. The hole of Galaxidiotika was probably useful in the transfer of water from the 12 fountains to the upper city or used for the transfer of raisin to the port. Today it offers easy foot access to the beach.
