The imposing and historic monastery of Akrata holds its own place among the major monasteries of Egialia and is gaining prominence in religious tourism.
It is a women’s monastery, located at an altitude of 400 meters on the slope of Porrovitsa, overlooking the villages of Kalamia and Voutsimos. The site was chosen because it is not visible from the Corinthian Gulf, ensuring that the Monastery would remain hidden from the Turks and other conquerors.
Visitors will find beautifully maintained grounds, flourishing gardens, the small chapel of the Holy Trinity, shops with ecclesiastical items, and the wonderful creations of Sister Sofronia, as well as a museum with rare artifacts from the glorious past and the small chapel of Saint Sophronios.
The first structure was built by persecuted monks, likely before 1600, in honor of All Saints. It is not known when the old monastery was abandoned. The current monastery was built in 1706, but a great fire in 1860 destroyed it, tragically killing most of the nuns. As a result, the Monastery of the Holy Trinity became dependent on larger monasteries.
It officially reopened on February 27, 2017.
