On the east side of Egialia (Akrata), there is a large area which is consisted of the mountain Helmos, the Stygos waters and the forest of Zarouchla. According to the mythology, at the valley of Styx and the rock of Aroania there used to flow water, that made the people who drink it immortal.
That was also the place where the Gods of Olympus used to vow, but also the place where Thetis bathed her son, Achilles, thus making him immortal.
The scenery of the waterfalls is magnificent and the area itself is known as ‘the botanic paradise’. Visitors can approach the area of Stygos waters only on foot, by following the hiking route MesoroygiStigos waters (a 3- hour of walking pathway), from April until November, in order to avoid heavy snowfall during the winter months.
