The Diakopto–Kalavryta Rack Railway (Odontotos) is one of Greece’s most important engineering and historical landmarks and the country’s only rack railway of its kind. Completed in 1896 after five years of construction, it has connected Diakopto with Kalavryta ever since, crossing the spectacular Vouraikos Gorge. The 22-kilometre route passes through tunnels, bridges, waterfalls, and areas of exceptional natural beauty, with an intermediate stop at Kato Zachlorou. The marked European long-distance hiking trail E4 runs alongside much of the railway, making the area a popular destination for hikers. In 1996, the Greek Ministry of Culture designated the railway, together with its stations, infrastructure, and surrounding corridor, as a protected historic monument in recognition of its outstanding historical, engineering, and cultural significance.
